BMW has made a strong commitment – and has been an industry leader – in luxury hybrid and electric vehicles. The X2 was introduced in 2017, and it’s spunky crossover appeal made it an instant favorite. The iconic brand will be adding several electric models to the family in the coming years, including the i4 sedan and iNext SUV. They haven’t officially announced an electric X2 (expected to be called the BMW iX2 Electric Crossover), but spy shots are giving us a sneak peek.
Spotted: A Fully Electric BMW X2
A fully electric BMW X2 prototype was spotted in chilly Sweden, where it is undergoing cold-weather testing. Sharp-eyed observers noted that the “Hybrid Test Vehicle” stickers that were seen on the plug-in hybrid prototype BMW revealed earlier this year have been replaced with “Electric Test Vehicle” stickers. BMW didn’t go out of its way to camouflage the vehicle (apart from some disguising of the fog lights).
The electric X2 is based on the X1 and we expect 38 and 76 kWh batteries with a range of 115 and 190 miles respectively. The X1 is known for the minimalist style of the interior, and this is another feature we predict will be carried over into the X2.
BMW hasn’t released any details on the power train, but we expect an all new 5th generation drivetrain, purpose-built for the brand’s electric lineup. This will also be featured on the upcoming BMW iX3 and BMW iNEXT.
BMW is forging ahead in the electric market – they’ve registered every model name from iX1 to iX9, so we have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.
